This long Hornchurch garden was designed to work hard for family life, while still feeling calm, ordered and quietly sophisticated. The clients wanted a playful space for five children, but also somewhere the adults could entertain properly, so the scheme was arranged around a strong central axis with open lawn, stepping stones and generous terraces.

The design balances open, usable space with more intimate places to sit, gather and enjoy the garden. A central seating area, granite benches, firepit, hot tub area and garden room help create a series of destinations, drawing the eye through the garden while giving the family different ways to use the space throughout the day and into the evening.

Mature trees and layered boundary planting soften the clean geometry, bringing shade, movement and a sense of privacy. The result is a practical family garden with a grown-up edge, structured enough for entertaining, relaxed enough for everyday life, and full of small moments that make the space feel personal.
