The client was a devoted koi keeper, and that passion became the heart of the design. Rather than treating the pond as a decorative extra, the garden was composed around a walk-over linear pond, giving water a calm architectural presence. Dark reflective surfaces, a timber bridge, crisp stone detailing and the sound of falling water bring movement and atmosphere, while allowing the koi pond to sit confidently within the daily life of the garden.
Beyond the water, the scheme opens into a series of generous outdoor spaces. A raised entertaining terrace creates a destination at the rear of the garden, surrounded by lush planting and positioned beside a modern summerhouse. This gave the clients a secondary seating area, somewhere to retreat, gather, entertain or simply shelter when the weather turned.
The garden balances strong geometry with softness. Clipped evergreens, tall horsetail, blue grasses, layered foliage and the retained Magnolia give the scheme rhythm and texture, while the sculptural white seating introduces a bold contemporary note. The result is clean and composed, but not cold. It has the polish of a modern garden, with the depth and atmosphere of something more personal.
Viewed from inside the house, the garden now feels like part of the architecture. The open bifold doors frame water, planting, timber and light, pulling the eye through the living space and into the garden beyond.
What was once an overgrown inheritance has become a refined outdoor room, built around movement, reflection and the quiet drama of water.
